In this blog post I will be talking about the different ways the media tries to persuade you.

When trying to persuade someone, there are two different ways of going about this. The first is called the Central route and the second is called the peripheral route

The central route: This is when they give you facts and information which has a long-term impact on us.

Another way they try to convince you is called a peripheral route.  This uses the tactics of emotion, pulling at your heart strings, or make you laugh so hard your stomach hurts.

Examples of the central route in media today would be a phone or car commercial. When they are telling you about the specs of the item or when they compare the product to others, they are trying to persuade you about which one is better.

As for peripheral, an example of this would be the dog commercials when the puppies are all in their crates with sad faces. This pulls at your emotions; makes you feel sad which will lead to you wanting to donate more money.

Each one of these has an impact on us, whether that is short term or long term.

Lots of businesses use humor to persuade you about something. Something to look out for during the Superbowl is the commercials. The media is cutthroat, everyone is trying to be the best.

Each Superbowl add is trying to be the funniest, or most remembered. When watching these, keep an eye out for the examples above on how the media tries to persuade you!
