After watching President Nelsons talk online called “Think Celestial”, I realized how they use personal experience in his talk to get a point across. They are using the narrative theory to help explain something and help us connect more to his talk. As we talked about in class, narrative theory impacts our entire life. Because of something that happened, it changed our past and our current life because we will think or act differently because of what happened. We will continue to make certain choices based off of something that happened.
I thought it was also interesting how you could tell his intent and how much he cares based off of his facial expressions. You can see when his face scrunches up just a bit and his smile fades that he is becoming more serious and means what he is talking about. Facial expressions have a big impact on how your words come across. If you are smiling and your eyes are squinting, we can tell you are happy or excited about something or think it was funny. He tips his dead down and smiles at the end of a sentence as well when he says something he cares about. President Nelson also uses his eye brows a lot when talking. This is when you know he is serious or explaining something that matters to him. Facial expressions can express more about the importance of what you are saying as it can confirm your intentions with the words.
Something else you notice about him when he talks, he tilts his head just a bit when changing or starting a new sentence. He does it when he is changing tones as well. His use of facial expressions and his narrative theory when sharing a story from his life, helps us all have a better understanding and capability to understand his tone and intentions when talking with the congregation.
